Anzac Day
© 1994 Glen Moffatt
It's Anzac Day morning, the streets are empty
The wind is cold upon my face
The day is dawning, and I've drunk plenty
To get me through to dawn parade
My band's been playing round the corner
We play there every Sunday night
And I'm just praying the Devil's water
Will get me through to Anzac night
My grandaddy, shipped to the islands
Never saw a fighting day
The army doctor stamped the papers
Unfit for combat, too fit to stay
Demolition in the Pacific
While his mates with rifles fired
"Dearest Betty, I feel my effort
"Just ain't worth enough," he'd write
Well, it's Anzac Day, all
our boys been blown away
And nobody gives a damn about the sacrifice
they made
All the shops along the beachfront are opening
this day
God, don't they know it's Anzac Day?
Donald Clancy, a man of legend
A hero of the second war
Well, he beat the foe then, but he can't beat age
No, he can't even reach the door
His proud and broad frame now supported
By a nurse he calls The Brass
She helps remember who his kids are
She wipes his chin and nose and arse
Well, it's Anzac Day, for
his boys been blown away
And nobody gives a damn about the sacrifice he
made
All the shops along the beachfront are opening
this day
God, don't they know it's Anzac Day?
John McGuire, apprentice plumber
Never owned a fighting bone
But he was killed, bombed in Korea
Cold as sin, but not alone
All had families, wives and children
Barely old enough to know
John's dear Sally, she got a letter
But swore she'd never let John go
Well, it's Anzac Day, for
her boy's been blown away
And nobody seems to understand the sacrifice
she made
All the shops along the beachfront are opening
this day
God, don't they know it's Anzac Day?
Lest we forget those before us
Who gave their lives for what we've got
Is it really worth a cent now?
Shipped to destruction, all for what?
Now we're craning at the flagpole
As the sheet waves into sight
And we're just praying the Devil's water
Will get us through to Anzac night
A Place To Play
© 1995 Glen Moffatt
I don't want your pity
I don't like this city
All I want is a place to play
And I don't want your money
I don't even like you, honey
All I want is a place to play
A place to play where I
can sing my songs
A place to play where I can forget the wrongs
been done to me
And when my time is through I don't care where
they send me to
As long as there's a place to play
I don't need possessions
I've got my confessions
All I want is a place to play
And I don't yearn for nothing
I don't care who I'm loving
All I want is a place to play
A place to play where I
can sing my songs
A place to play where I can forget the wrongs
been done to me
And when my time is through I don't care where
they send me to
As long as there's a place to play
A place to play where I
can sing my songs
A place to play where I can forget the wrongs
been done to me
And when my time is through I don't care where
they send me to
As long as there's a place to play
A place to play, a place to sing
A place where I can do my thing
A place to play, a place to pick
A place where I can get my kicks
Bottle
Of Beer
© 2000 Glen Moffatt
Tonight I will meet you just the way that we planned
And when you come to me I will take you in hand
I'll hold you so tight until the daylight
Don't ever leave me, bottle of beer
I long to hold you with the lights way down low
There's nothing quite like it when your juices flow
Say that you'll be mine until the end of time
I think I love you, bottle of beer
I'm drawn to the neon like a moth to a flame
It's been my ruin, but I come just the same
I know the jukebox like the back of my hand
But there was once someone who would not understand
I'm drawn to the neon like a moth to a flame
It's been my ruin, but I come just the same
I know the jukebox like the back of my hand
But there was once someone who did not understand
She was my real love until things turned bad
Guess I never realised what it was that I had
Now I've found someone who I can count on
Don't ever leave me, bottle of beer

I don't wear a hat
I drink too much beer and it's making me fat
Ain't bought a new shirt in quite a long while
Wait long enough and I'll come back into style
I never rode a horse
People keep telling me it's par for the course
But playing this music ain't about looking good
It comes from the heart just the way that it should
And I won't do what I'm
told
I've been like this since I was just a day old
So don't keep trying to change the way that it
is
Cos I'm a country music son of a bitch
I never learned to dance
All in a line with my thumbs in my pants
I need to feel a woman close in my arms
Be overtaken by her feminine charms
I feel a need to celebrate
So pour me a whisky and it better be straight
I've got to keep on being true to myself
Even if it might be bad for my health
And I won't do what I'm
told
I've been like this since I was just a day old
So don't keep trying to change the way that it
is
Cos I'm a country music son of a bitch
And I won't do what I'm
told
I've been like this since I was just a day old
So don't keep trying to change the way that it
is
Cos I'm a country music son of a bitch
Course Of True Love, The
© 1997 Glen Moffatt/Ritchie Pickett
Who put those tears in your eyes?
Who was the one that made you cry?
Who was the one that told a lie?
Who put those tears in your eyes?
Who put the hurting in your heart?
Who stole my chances from the start?
Don't let him tear our world apart
Who put the hurting in your heart?
I will wipe away your tears
I will take away your fears
Here in this time and place
I'll put the smile back on your face
And that's for always, big ways and small ways
You can run with the wind
I would not try to rope you in
I'll be here when you return
I will not try to rope you in
I will wipe away your tears
I will take away your fears
Here in this time and place
I'll put the smile back on your face
And that's for always, big ways and small ways
The course of true love can be rough
And if you think I'm not enough
Just watch me stay when times get tough
The course of true love can be rough
The course of true love can be rough
The course of true love can be rough
The course of true love can be rough
Daisy's
Chain
© 1997 Glen Moffatt/Ritchie Pickett
Daisy must've had one hundred lovers
I guess to her I was just another
But I felt I could make her understand
But Daisy'd never be happy with a normal life
She would never be any man's wife
So tonight I sit alone here with my pain
I'm just another link in Daisy's chain
Late at night when the lights were low
And Daisy's fire was burning slow
Everything I needed was there in Daisy's arms
But Daisy said the same thing to many men
Ten to one she's gonna do it again
As I sit here with her memory running round my brain
I'm just another link in Daisy's chain
Now the circle's been broken in Daisy's
chain
No one will be taken in by her again
I laid her in her grave
No more am I a slave to Daisy's chain
Now the circle's been broken in Daisy's
chain
No one will be taken in by her again
I laid her in her grave
No more am I a slave to Daisy's chain
Don't I Know Who I Am?
© 1996 Glen Moffatt/Arthur Baysting
It's a certain kind of torture every time you're near
But I can't do without you, and that's why I'm still here
I know I'm being foolish, I know I should be gone
But I'm so afraid of leaving I just keep hanging on
Don't I know who I am?
Don't I know who I am?
I'm just your fool
Don't I know who I am?
You like your independence, you tell me things are fine
But I keep hearing stories and I can read between the lines
It's a certain kind of comfort when you treat me like you do
And if I had the courage, I'd do the same to you
Don't I know who I am?
Don't I know who I am?
I'm just your fool
Don't I know who I am?
Don't I know who I am?
Don't I know who I am?
I'm just a fool in love
Don't I know who I am?
Drivin' Me Lonesome
© 2000 Glen Moffatt
This highway seems to go on forever
So sad you had to move away
My memories are my travelling companions
I'm coming to see you, but I don't know what I'll say
You're driving me lonesome, lonesome for you
I once was your sweetheart, but now we are
through
You're loving another, making me blue
You're driving me lonesome, I'm driving to you
My car seems to know where it's going
We've been down this road before
One million things I should tell you
But I lose my nerve before I reach your door
You're driving me lonesome, lonesome for you
I once was your sweetheart, but now we are
through
You're loving another, making me blue
You're driving me lonesome, I'm driving to you
You're driving me lonesome, lonesome for you
I once was your sweetheart, but now we are
through
You're loving another, making me blue
You're driving me lonesome, I'm driving to you
You're driving me lonesome, I'm driving to you
English
Rose
© 1997 Glen Moffatt/Ritchie Pickett
I want an English rose growing in my garden
Just to watch her bloom could melt the heart
that's hardened
Don't want ties to bind her down
I'd be happy just to watch her beauty abound
I want an English rose growing in my garden
There's a wild rose growing on foreign soil
And in the garden of love for her I'd toil
I'd shelter her from the wind and the rain
Just for the chance to smell her perfume again
I want an English rose growing in my garden
Just to watch her bloom could melt the heart
that's hardened
Don't want ties to bind her down
I'd be happy just to watch her beauty abound
I want an English rose growing in my garden
From her stem to her petals she's perfection indeed
Makes all the other flowers look like weeds
I wouldn't want to pick her, her beauty would die
I just want to be around her, and that is why
That is why
I want an English rose growing in my garden
Just to watch her bloom could melt the heart
that's hardened
Don't want ties to bind her down
I'd be happy just to watch her beauty abound
I want an English rose growing in my garden
Oh, I want an English rose growing in my garden
Geraldine

Time keeps pushing me down the line
Gotta play some music to some friends of mine
Don't have to put it on or make a scene with friends like Geraldine
She's got a country feel you can understand
She's like a freshwater spring to a thirsty land
You can always find the time for Geraldine
Geraldine, Geraldine
You're a smooth-talking woman, but you never
say what you mean
I'd love to take you with me, but you're right
where you've always been
So I know just where I'll find you, Geraldine
You can see her in the winter with her white dress on
There's ice on the windows, but the fire's warm
A cold wind blowing across my back, covering up my tracks
Seasons turn and she's looking fine
She's got a lot to do, but there's plenty of time
So take some and get close to Geraldine
Geraldine, Geraldine
You're a smooth-talking woman, but you never
say what you mean
I'd love to take you with me, but you're right
where you've always been
So I know just where I'll find you, Geraldine
She's gentle and strong, wild and tame
A man's town with a woman's name
Geraldine, Geraldine
You're a smooth-talking woman, but you never
say what you mean
I'd love to take you with me, but you're right
where you've always been
So I know just where I'll find you, Geraldine
I'd love to take you with me, but you're right where you've always been
So I know just where I'll find you, Geraldine
Here
Comes Friday
© 1988 Glen Moffatt
Sitting down here with you on my mind
Wondering if I ever should'a' left you behind
But I can't so I won't even try
Waiting for Friday when I'll come home
Get a kiss from you, get you alone
Make some love underneath the night sky
Woh, here comes Friday
Woh, we'll make it my day
Well, the people up here don't like me at all
Won't lend me change so I can give you a call
Just to hear your voice makes me all right
Now Thursday's here, I'm on the edge of my seat
I won't go to bed, 'cause I know I won't sleep
The hours drag on, I get uptight, but let me tell ya
Woh, here comes Friday
Gonna make some love, gonna get it right
Gonna hug my girl 'cause she's all right
Woh, look out, Friday
Woh, here comes Friday
Now Friday's here and I'm headed home
Thinking of you sitting there alone
But the weekend goes by, oh, so fast
And I'm back here again with you on my mind
Wondering if I ever should'a' left you behind
But I can't so I won't even try
Waiting for Friday when I'll come home
Get a kiss from you, get you alone
Make some love underneath the night sky
Woh, here comes Friday
Woh, we'll make it my day
Gonna make some love, gonna get it right
Gonna hug my girl 'cause she's all right
Woh, look out, Friday
Woh, here comes Friday
Hotel Room

Hotel room, won't you tell me of the tales within your walls
Won't you tell me of your rises and your falls
Hotel room, won't you tell me who has tread upon your floor
Won't you tell me who has darkened up your door
Tell me more, hotel room
Hotel room, is it true that your were once a stately sight?
Did your bedside lamp once glow a brilliant white?
Hotel room, now the paper on your walls is torn and grey
And your porcelain is stained and cracked away
Your curtains frayed, hotel room
There's a woman playing on my mind
One I had to leave behind
Let us revel in your cheap red wine
Tell me your secrets, I'll tell you mine, hotel room
Hotel room, am I not the only one you've ever had?
Does my leaving in the morning make you sad?
Hotel room, 'cause you know that with the sunrise I'll be gone
My work is done, I've got to move along
Please be strong, hotel room
There's a woman playing on my mind
One I have to leave behind
Let us revel in your cheap red wine
Tell me your secrets, I'll tell you mine, hotel room

If That's What You Want
© 1998 Glen Moffatt
I've had word you're leaving
I've had word you're gone
You're in a hurry to shake my memory
If that's what you want
I've learned my lesson, you got my blessing
If that's what you want
I've had word you were cheating
I've had word you'd strayed
Oh, keep your secrets for your pine box
If that's what you want
Time's a-healing, there's no hard feelings
If that's what you want
I've had word you're going home now
Going back where you're from
Well, Ruatoria could be good for ya
If that's what you
You can blame me, set my name free
If that's what you want
If that's what you want
If that's what you want
If that's what you want
I'm Still Here
© 1996 Glen Moffatt
I've been a bastard, I've been an angel
I've been the safe bet and I've been endangered
I've taken short cuts, I've come a long way
Been in the right place, but on the wrong day
I'm... I'm still here
I'm... I'm still here
I've been the straight man, I've been the fall guy
I made myself laugh, I made the girls cry
I was the first born, I'll be the last dead
Kicked in the backside and punched in the head
I'm... I'm still here
I'm still here
Don't you know, I'm still here
I've been a lover, I've been a fighter
I played it loose and I got it tighter
I've been the bit part, I've played the main man
Bathed in the spotlight, danced in the rain, and
I've been a nightmare, I've been a wet dream
I spoke in whispers, now I'm starting to scream
I'm... I'm still here
I'm... I'm still here
I'm still here
Don't you know, I'm still here
I'm still here
I'm still here
I'm still here
Keeping Your Head Above Water
© 1998 Glen Moffatt
Keeping your head above water
Not getting out when you oughta
Carrying the world on your shoulders
Making amends when your friends aren't the friends that they were before
Laying your cards on the table
Not getting out when you're able
Sink like a stone in the ocean
Living the life of a man and his wife just don't work no more
All I'm asking for is forgiveness
Am I asking for too much?
What if mercy's all I'm needing from you, girl?
And maybe just a little touch
Not to try again, as such
More a plea to stay in touch
Keeping your head above water
She gave back the ring that you bought her
Surfing a wave of emotion
Riding the tide now you're not by her side, and she's doing well
Oh, and you're keeping your head above water
Keeping your head above water
Keeping your head above water
Keeping your head, keeping your head above water
Least You Could Do, The
© 1996 Glen Moffatt
You had to turn around before you left me
You had to see if I was gonna cry
Well, darling, I sure hate to disappoint you
But you're not the only star up in the sky
I'll get along without you here, babe
It's nowhere near the hardest thing I'll do
You're leaving me without a fear, babe
You know that is the least you could do
You thought your final scene would leave me reeling
You thought I would break down in misery
Hey, I sure hate to rain on your parade, dear
But you're not the only fish down in the sea
I'll get along without you here, babe
It's nowhere near the hardest thing I'll do
You're leaving me without a fear, babe
You know that is the least you could do
You know that is the least you could do
Like Father, Like Son
© 1985 Glen Moffatt
If you ask why I'm driving trucks and not practising law
I'll say I gave it a go, but I found it was such a bore
And I could've become a doctor, man
But it was too much hard work for me to stand
Some things never change
Like father, like son
If you ask why I'm drinking here and not home with my kin
I'd rather be here romancing a bottle of gin
I'd rather be joking with my friends
Chatting up barmaids until the night ends
Some things never change
Like father, like son
Well, some things never change and they won't change now
And if they did I should would wonder how
If you ask why I spend my pay before it's in my hand
I'll say money's just paper and I couldn't give a damn
Well, the bills keep mounting up at home
Life'd be easier if I lived it alone
Some things never change
Like father, like son
Well, some things never change and they won't change now
And if they did I should would wonder how
If you ask why I spend my pay before it's in my hand
I'll say money's just paper and I couldn't give a damn
Well, the bills keep mounting up at home
Life'd be easier if I lived it alone
Some things never change
Like father, like son
Some things never change
Like father, like son
Some things never change
Like father, like son
Match
Made In Hell
© 1998 Glen Moffatt/Arthur Baysting
When we met it was lust at first sight
We made love on our very first night
You know, I fell for you body and soul
Like a fire burning out of control
You got my brain crawling out of my head
And you knocked me right out of my bed
Now I can't drag myself off the floor
You hit me hard, but I'm wanting some more
I'm a mixed-up, muddled-up confused man
You're the daughter of the Devil himself
It's gonna be rough, 'cause I can tell
You and I are a match made in hell
Well, I thought I was over the moon
But today it's a different tune
You got me busted and bent out of shape
And I don't even want to escape
I'm a mixed-up, muddled-up confused man
You're the daughter of the Devil himself
It's gonna be rough, 'cause I can tell
You and I are a match made in hell
We're on the road to ruin like a runaway train
I don't know what I'm doing, but I'd do it again
I'm a mixed-up, muddled-up confused man
You're the daughter of the Devil himself
It's gonna be rough, 'cause I can tell
You and I are a match made in hell
I'm a mixed-up, muddled-up confused man
You're the daughter of the Devil himself
It's gonna be rough, 'cause I can tell
You and I are a match made in hell
My Heart Ain't Broken (The
Chronic Liar)
© 1989 Glen Moffatt
I'm not crying over you, it's just something in my eye
And I'm not even missing you since the day you said goodbye
I'm not the one sending you flowers with cards that are not signed
And you ain't even occupying my mind
Well, I'm not thinking of you every hour of every passing day
And I'm not dialling your number but hanging up before I say
"I don't love you, never have, and I never ever will"
And that ain't your picture sitting on my window sill
Though I'm a chronic liar, but I never lie
Except when I tell you that I'm doing great
My life's back on the lines
And I don't miss you or all the fun we had
And my tears ain't falling, my heart ain't
broken in half
Well, I'm not lying awake at night, too afraid to go to sleep
'Cause I'm not dreaming those dreams of when our love flowed deep
And I'm not keeping the card that pledged your love for me
And I'm not crying so much that I can't see
I'm a chronic liar, but I never lie
Except when I tell you that I'm doing great
My life's back on the lines
And I don't miss you or all the times we had
And my tears ain't falling, my heart ain't
broken in half
If I'm a chronic liar, well, then so are you
Like when you told me that you needed me
And that you loved me too
And I don't miss you or all the love we had
And my tears ain't falling, my heart ain't
broken in half
I said my tears ain't falling, my heart ain't broken in half
My Plane
© 1996 Glen Moffatt
Five weeks don't seem too long, you can say it in one breath
But it's an eternity from the one that you love best
Time can take a toll on you and fill your head with doubts
I've spent the last long while trying to figure this all out
While my plane was touching down
She was waiting for me in the lounge
But I just can't lose this frown
While my plane was touching down
Make your way through customs, "Have you something to declare?"
Only that I love the girl that I left waiting here
And if she don't feel the same I 'd wish that I were dead
I keep coming back to what was going through my head
While my plane was touching down
She was waiting for me in the lounge
But I just can't lose this frown
While my plane was touching down
I'm getting butterflies the closer that I get
She looks as lovely as the day when we first met
She throws her arms around me, whispers in my ear
And I'm pleased to say that all those doubts just disappeared
While my plane was touching down
She was waiting for me in the lounge
Flying into my home town
And my plane was touching down
While my plane was touching down
She was waiting for me in the lounge
Flying into my home town
And my plane was touching down
Flying into my home town
And my plane was touching down
No-Replacement Plan
© 1998 Glen Moffatt
My heart's got a no-replacement plan, I hope
you understand
I hate to let you down and watch you go
Wholesale redundancies, can't you see what
they've done to me?
My arms want to expand, but my heart's got a
no-replacement plan
My eyes keep looking around
My ears are glued to the ground
My fingers count up the cost
Of every sure thing I've lost
My heart's got a no-replacement plan, I hope
you understand
I hate to let you down and watch you go
Wholesale redundancies, can't you see what
they've done to me?
My arms want to expand, but my heart's got a
no-replacement plan
My heart is clearly the boss
And it just can't handle the loss
So don't you even apply
Just tell your feet walk on by
'Cause my heart's got a no-replacement plan,
I hope you understand
I hate to let you down and watch you go
Wholesale redundancies, can't you see what
they've done to me?
My arms want to expand, but my heart's got a
no-replacement plan
My arms want to expand, but my heart's got a no-replacement plan
Place, The
© 1996 Glen Moffatt/Arthur Baysting
This used to be the place, but now it's just a place
I come to when I'm feeling down
Away from the misery of my recent history
When we were the talk of the town
I throw darts and shoot pool or sit on my bar stool
And stare at the booze on the shelves
This used to be the place, but now it's just
a place
That's sadder than anyplace else
She used to be my girl, but not any more, girl
She's living with somebody new
When they ask how I'm coping, I say, "Yes, I'm hoping"
But inside I'm breaking in two
So it's back to the old place that used to be our place
As I watch you walk in the room
I give you a grin, but you're dancing with
him
And I pretend I don't smell your perfume
This used to be the place, but now it's just a place
I come to when I'm feeling down
Away from the misery of my recent history
When we were the talk of the town
I throw darts and shoot pool or sit on my bar stool
And stare at the booze on the shelves
This used to be the place, but now it's just
a place
That's sadder than anyplace else
This used to be the place, but now it's just

Praying For Rain
© 1995 Glen Moffatt
Praying for rain to fall from the sky
Praying for rain to cover the dry
Parched earth to which he'd given his blood
Praying to see the hills turn green and the
rivers flood
Old man Buck had a Hawke's Bay farm not far from Bay View town
In the family for eighty-odd years, handed down
From father to father, to eldest son to make a living on the land
But it had never been like this before, on his knees in the bottom-land
Praying for rain to fall from the sky
Praying for rain to cover the dry
Parched earth to which he'd given his blood
Praying to see the hills turn green and the
rivers flood
The weatherman had a fancy word, Buck just called it drought
And the government sent a minister's aide to take a look around
The bills kept coming, the money didn't, the stock still had no feed
And in the house that his grandad built, Buck was on his knees
Praying for rain to fall from the sky
Praying for rain to cover the dry
Parched earth to which he'd given his blood
Praying to see the hills turn green and the
rivers flood
Well, Buck had a meeting with the bank man
But that day the old man wasn't around
They found him hanging from the woolshed
And that night the heavens soaked the ground
Praying for rain to fall from the sky
Praying for rain to cover the dry
Parched earth to which he'd given his blood
Praying to see the hills turn green and the
rivers flood
Praying for rain to fall from the sky
Rachel
© 1995 Glen Moffatt
I didn't say goodbye although I wanted to
I never said I loved you, but I did
And even if you knew how I still think of you
That would not justify the things I did
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
I stood and watched you go
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
But how was I to know?
A farm boy and a waitress, some romantic tale
I met you when I was still quite naive
Your beauty and your laughter knew no parallel
You stole away my heart just like a thief
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
I stood and watched you go
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
But how was I to know?
Should not involve your head in matters of the heart
Don't let your mind be betrayed by a kiss
You cannot venture further when your soul's opposed
But you're frightened of the thrills that you might miss
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
I stood and watched you go
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
But how was I to know?
Well, if I could do it over
I'd do it differently
If we could talk it over
You would still be with me
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
I stood and watched you go
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
But how was I to know?
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
Oh, Rachel, I was such a fool
But how was I to know?

Radio radio, play me a song that I know
Been driving all night and I still got a long way to go
My heater is broke and I'm down to my last cigarette
But I still got the radio, it ain't given up on me yet
If I can make it to the end of the line
Everything is gonna be fine
Radio radio
Radio radio
Making good time 'cause there's nobody else on the road
The moon is shining bright and I still got a long way to go
If I can just keep up this pace
In the morning I will see her face
Radio radio
Radio radio
You lit this fire inside me
It's your love that fuels the flames
You will be beside me
When I get home again
Radio radio
Radio radio
Play me some country, play me some old rock and roll
A little bit of rhythm and blues, and some sweet-sounding soul
Motown, 'Downtown', Motor City, New Orleans
The Warratahs, 'How Bizarre', 'Counting The Beat', and The Clean
My baby's at the end of the line
You know what I got on my mind

If I thought I'd get played on the radio, I'd take more care with this song
If I thought I could stop you from leaving then, baby, you wouldn't be gone
If the thought of goodbye didn't hurt me, I'd be asleep in my bed
But the DJ keeps playing old love songs, and I can't get you out of my head
Radio songs, radio songs
All they do is remind me, baby, you're gone
Radio songs
As I lay in the dark I heard Willie singing 'Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain'
And I heard Arlo Guthrie sing something about sleeping in shackles and chains
You slipped from my mind for a minute and I thought I might drift off to sleep
But that was before I heard Haggard moaning out "The Dream"
Radio songs, radio songs
All they do is remind me, baby, you're gone
Radio songs
Radio songs
All they do is remind me, baby, you're gone
Radio songs

Somewhere
In New Zealand Tonight
© 1994 Glen Moffatt
Every scratch on this guitar tells a story
Every line on my face is a sign
There're miles for the dirt on my cowboy boots
And I'm hanging on for closing time
Singing my songs and keeping it country
But there ain't a cowboy hat in sight
There ain't no blue moon over Kentucky
'Cause I'm somewhere in New Zealand tonight
So, let the St Joseph's Maori girls keep
singing
There ain't no silver lining for the land of
the long white cloud
The kiwi can't fly, but I'm doing something
right
I'm somewhere in New Zealand tonight
I'm somewhere in New Zealand tonight
Smoke stings my eyes and it taints my clothes
And her memory taints my mind
While I'm playing for you in this late-night bar
She's somewhere in New Zealand tonight
Ah, she's somewhere in New Zealand tonight
So, let the St Joseph's Maori girls keep
singing
There ain't no silver lining for the land of
the long white cloud
The kiwi can't fly, but I'm doing something
right
I'm somewhere in New Zealand tonight
I'm somewhere in New Zealand tonight
I'm somewhere in New Zealand tonight
Song For Dale

I'm cold and I'm tired, I've never been this down before
I'm cold and I'm tired, I've never been this down before
Well, it's almost 3.30 in the morning and I'm knocking on your door
It's not that I'm begging, I was just thinking of you
It's not that I'm begging, I was just thinking of you
I feel bad that I woke you, and I'm sorry if I woke him too
I need somebody to hold me like you used to do
I need somebody to hold me like you used to do
There's no obligations, I just want to talk to you
Unlatch the flyscreen, let me slip on inside
Unlatch the flyscreen, let me slip on inside
We'll talk in whispers, he won't hear me swallow my pride
Well, I'm cold and I'm tired, I've never been this down before
I'm cold and I'm tired, I have never been this down before
Well, it's almost 3.30 in the morning and I'm knocking on your door
Sweet Suzanne
© 1993 Glen Moffatt
I hear you've found another John
It didn't take you very long
But then the boys never did call you slow
Does he know it's just a game;
He's waitin' round for the rules to change?
And where are you tonight
Where are you tonight
Where are you tonight, Sweet Suzanne?
Your sister told me all the news
I just refused to see the clues
Think you'd try to keep the facts well hid
But I couldn't think of a nicer way
To find out I'd been thrown away
And where are you tonight
Where are you tonight
Where are you tonight, Sweet Suzanne?
Funny how it seems to work
Winding up looking like a jerk
'Cause you're the final one to hear the truth
They say I'm better off this way
It would'a' come some other day
Just take a look at you now for proof
Take a good look
I heard your new romance did end
You're back out in the bars again
You never were a one to go alone
I hope you net your elusive goal
May God save your sorry soul
And where are you tonight
Where are you tonight
Where are you tonight, Sweet Suzanne?
Where are you tonight
Where are you tonight
Where are you tonight, Sweet Suzanne?
Tearing My Old Heart Down
© 1997 Glen Moffatt/Malcolm
McCallum
They're tearing my old heart down
Taking the broken pieces she left lying round
Now my love's got no place to dwell
My dreams are packed and gone
Now they're tearing my old heart down
This was the only heart I'd ever loved in
She was the one that made this heart a home
Inside it's still the same old place, the only difference is she's gone
And I've tried, but I can't bring myself to just sell to anyone
So they're tearing my old heart down
Taking the broken pieces she left lying round
Now my love's got no place to dwell
My dreams are packed and gone
Now they're tearing my old heart down
Just last week I was told they were foreclosing
I can't keep up these payments on my own
And I'm thinking as that wrecking ball brings me to my knees
What kind of fool lets a happy heart wind up in times like these?
Now they're tearing my old heart down
Taking the broken pieces she left lying round
Now my love's got no place to dwell
My dreams are packed and gone
Now they're tearing my old heart down
Now my love's got no place to dwell
My dreams are packed and gone
Now they're tearing my old heart down
There Ain't No TV Show Like This
© 1996 Glen Moffatt/Arthur Baysting
Don't turn the TV on, just leave that music playing low
No need to hurry none, just keep on moving real slow
Come over next to me and set my inhibitions free
Don't turn the TV on, just tear that phone out of the wall
Don't let 'em know we're home, we don't want nobody round at all
Come on, lay down by my side, now we've got nothing left to hide
Well, turn out the lights, let's get it right
Hold on to me with all of your might
I know we're being bad, but it's feeling so good
When you do the things to me that you told me you would!
Don't light that cigarette, there's still some stuff that we can do
Forget the TV set, there's time for that when we get through
Come on, give me one more kiss, there ain't no TV show like this
Come on, give me one more kiss, there ain't no TV show like this
Well, turn out the lights, let's get it right
Hold on to me with all of your might
I know we're being bad, but it's feeling so good
When you do the things to me that you told me you would!
Truck Driver In His Head
© 1992 Glen Moffatt
Well, he may have a fancy title
A name-plate on his desk
He spends the week at a business course
With a badge pinned on his chest
He's got the latest model company car
And a dark blue tie to match
But, lady, please don't count your chicks
Before they've even hatched
'Cause he still gets drunk with the boys
Makes a lot of noise
Bold as brass, scratches his arse
Swears with the Joes he employs
With a right foot heavy as lead
Won't leave the road till he's dead
A punch from the south, a big ugly mouth
He's a truck driver in his head
Lunch with his new client
On the company account
Wine and, "Please, another course"
No limit on amount
'Cause he still gets drunk with the boys
Makes a lot of noise
Bold as brass, scratches his arse
Swears with the Joes he employs
With a right foot heavy as lead
Won't leave the road till he's dead
A punch from the south, a big ugly mouth
He's a truck driver in his head
Well, he once had a wife I am told
But now he don't mention her name
She meant more than he ever knew
Until she went away
But he still gets drunk with the boys
Makes a lot of noise, oh yeah
Bold as brass, scratches his arse
Swears with the Joes he employs
With a right foot heavy as lead
Denies every word he's said
A punch from the south, a big ugly mouth
He's a truck driver in his head
Don't try to brand him, no one understands him
But the truck driver in his head
Up Country
©1987 Glen Moffatt
Well, I've had enough of armed robbery
Shooting people ain't my style
And I've gotten sick of high-class snobbery
I'm headed up country for a while
There's no good news in my mailbox
Just death, destruction and decay
You think you're right and there's another knock
Another cold and windy day
Well, I'm headed up country for a while
Where it's easier to smile
Where I can walk a country mile
And I'm headed up country for a while
I work all day to bring some money home
To try to keep my family fed
But prices rise and my wages don't
I'm either dying or I'm dead
Well, I'm headed up country for a while
Where it's easier to smile
Where I can walk a country mile
And I'm headed up country for a while
You can't walk the streets after eight o'clock
Without someone beating on your head
Your body can heal, but your mind cannot
So stay indoors all night instead
Well, I'm headed up country for a while
Where it's easier to smile
Where I can walk a country mile
And I'm headed up country for a while
Where I can walk a country mile
I'm headed up country for a while
I'm headed up country for a while
I'm headed up country for a while
Winter
© 1998 Glen Moffatt/Robin Galley
Sunday morning, half past three
I'm sitting wondering what you're doing without me
The leaves of autumn scattered round my door
Winter's on its way
There's a cold wind howling through the trees
Snow on the mountains, feel your goodbye on the breeze
The lake is frozen, the moon is blue
All the stars are asking what went wrong with me and you
Now, it only seems like yesterday
Summer sun upon your face
When the night-time came I would lay me down
In your warm embrace
Now, it only seems like yesterday
Summer sun upon your face
When the night-time came I would lay me down
In your warm embrace
Now the house is silent, the phone never rings
There's dust collecting on all your favourite things
Miss you, baby, everything you do
Trying to figure out what went wrong with me and you
Still trying to figure out what went wrong with me and you
You've Got To Take Love
© 1994 Glen Moffatt
You've gotta take love when it comes for you
and take it with both hands
It waits around for no one, you won't get no
second chance
You can't say you've learned your lesson, this
might be the real thing
You've gotta take love when it comes for you,
it may never come again
You claim your last love left you with a broken heart
Suspicions and the jealousies ripped your soul apart
You vowed you'd never put yourself through the pain again
Well, I'm here to tell you, honey, you gotta try and try again
You've gotta take love when it comes for you
and take it with both hands
It waits around for no one, you won't get no
second chance
You can't say you've learned your lesson, this
might be the real thing
You've gotta take love when it comes for you,
it may never come again
Your nights of waiting by the phone are in your bygone days
And you say you've tried to make love stay a hundred different ways
You cry, "Enough's enough," but I might be your perfect match
You'll never know until you try, and that's the only catch
You've gotta take love when it comes for you
and take it with both hands
It waits around for no one, you won't get no
second chance
You can't say you've learned your lesson, this
might be the real thing
You've gotta take love when it comes for you,
it may never come again
You've gotta take love when it comes for you, it may never come again
